Live report direttamente dagli USA: concerto Turnstile+Gag in quel di Baltimora. Invidia a 1000!

Al mio arrivo sul posto circa un’ora prima dello show, la gente è già ammassata attorno all’edificio. Le persone in fila sono gasate e sentirle parlare di quanto folle sarà la notte che ci aspetta contribuisce già a far crescere l’energia attorno a questo evento.
Una volta dentro mi si presenta subito il banchetto del merch che è già assaltato, perciò mi metto rapidamente in fila: questa sera c’è in vendita una versione esclusiva di Glow On in vinile con un’artwork creato da un artista locale, limitato a circa 40 copie. Ovviamente tutti cercano di accaparrarsene una.

Subito dopo essere riuscita ad aggiudicarmi una copia, mi porto al cospetto del palco dove la gente ha già iniziato a disporsi. Il locale è strutturato in due sezioni: una inferiore, più prossima al palco, ed una superiore. A chi vuole prendere parte al mosh pit e vivere il concerto più “vero” è riservata ovviamente la zona inferiore, mentre chi desidera rincasare senza aver preso scarpate può disporsi nella parte superiore. Io non sono una di quelli, perciò, sempre con l’accortezza di difendere il mio prezioso vinile, decido di rimanere nella parte inferiore.

Chiacchierando qua e la coi presenti mi rendo conto che molti sono fan di vecchia data, mentre alcuni sono del tutto nuovi a questo tipo di eventi. Il comune denominatore comunque è la gran voglia di far festa che hanno tutti dopo l’obbligata segregazione di cui non si vedeva fine. Inoltre si tratta di una “partita in casa” per i Turnstile, infatti lo show è andato sold out molto velocemente ed il locale è strapieno. Tutto questo da un lato mi mette anche un po’ d’ansia: vero che all’ingresso vengono effettuati tutti i controlli del caso, ma nessuno sta indossando la mascherina. Dal retro delle mie TRE mascherine comunque, sono pronta a tutto quello che stasera mi aspetta.

La band di spalla entra in scena e la situazione si fa velocemente selvaggia: i Gag sono una vera hardcore band con un buon live set. È la prima volta che li sento, ma la loro energia sul palco me li fa apprezzare immediatamente. La gente è scatenata per tutto il tempo in un grande mosh pit, compreso chi assaggia questo tipo di show per la prima volta. A mio parere una validissima apertura per i Turnstile.

Dopo circa un’ora di spettacolo infatti, le luci si abbassano e nel momento in cui la gente, che si stava riprendendo dopo lo spettacolo dei Gag, inizia a vedere i ragazzi salire sul palco, la situazione degenera in un batter d’occhio: agitazione e calca per raggiungere le transenne in attesa della prima canzone che è No Surprise, un’intro piuttosto leggera che fa comunque danzare tutti.
Le cose iniziano a farsi serie quando parte Mystery. Come nella più grande tradizione degli show dei Turnstile, la gente inizia a salire sul palco correndo e rituffandosi da li in mezzo alla folla: si stanno tutti divertendo come pazzi. La scaletta è fatta prevalentemente di pezzi del nuovo album, ma c’è spazio anche per canzoni da Time&Space e Nonstop Feeling. Sentire Gravity per me è l’apice della serata, anche se si tratta del penultimo pezzo prima della chiusura con T.L.C.

La performance è stata meravigliosa, i ragazzi sono del tutto in palla e sono anche molto migliorati sotto tutti gli aspetti. La forte chimica che i membri della band dimostrano di avere si traduce inequivocabilmente nel loro modo di suonare e di rendere tutto così riuscito. Stanno plasmando il loro personale universo.

Penso che questo sia stato il miglior concerto a cui abbia assistito, non solo per lo spettacolo in sé ma anche per l’ambiente quasi familiare che si è creato grazie alla fanbase. La gente è uscita di testa, ma ha mantenuto una certa cautela bilanciandola con il rispetto della libertà reciproca: c’erano addirittura ragazzi che si preoccupavano di mantenere idratati e sicuri gli altri nel pit. La relazione tra la band e i fan poi è del tutto esemplare: ci sono stati momenti in cui sul palco erano presenti anche una quindicina di persone oltre alla band. Nessuno si è fatto male o ha in alcun modo influenzato negativamente la riuscita dello show, che è piuttosto stato arricchito da quella caotica coreografia.
È stato un modo fantastico di tornare alla musica live dopo le restrizioni imposte dalla pandemia, anzi non vedo l’ora di ripetere l’esperienza. Consiglio assolutamente a tutti di andarli a vedere, non aspettate! Anche se non siete in compagnia sarà la folla a farvi sentire in famiglia. Sono davvero una band da non perdere e non vedo l’ora di vedere cosa combineranno in futuro!

When I first arrived to get in line (about an hour early), it was already starting to wrap around the building. In line, people were stretching and talking about how crazy the night would be, which really got the energy up for the show. Once in the venue, I saw the line for the merch bar wrapping around and I quickly got in line.

There was an exclusive vinyl with a painted cover by a local artist with only about 40 done, so they were in high demand. After getting merch and settling in, everyone positioned themselves preparing for the show. Speaking around, some people were long-time fans and some were brand new to these kinds of shows.

It got me excited because everyone was ready to have a fun time after quarantining for what felt like forever. Also, it was a home show for Turnstile, so the show sold out very quickly and it was packed to the max. I will say I was a bit nervous because even though there was a health check, people definitely had their masks off and it was very crowded, but me and my three masks were ready for what was to come.

At the venue, there are two sections, the floor in front of the stage and one overlooking it. Those who wanted to partake in the mosh pit stayed at the bottom while those who didn’t stayed up top. This didn’t click for me and I stayed at the bottom with my vinyl in hand to get a better view of the show. The opener band came out and things got very wild very quickly. It was a band named Gag, a very hardcore punk band with really good live music. I had never listened to them before this show but seeing them live definitely made me like their music. The audience was already moshing with the pit being crazy wild. Even those who didn’t know the band were dancing and it was an overall great introduction to Turnstiles set.

After about an hour, the lights went down and they started coming on stage and it started getting wild again. People started screaming and pushing up to the front preparing for the first song. They opened with No Surprise, a light introductory song that got everyone dancing. But when Mystery played, things really got started. Like with most of their shows, fans started jumping on stage, running, and jumping back into the crowd. People were moshing, and overall just having a great time. They mostly played songs from their new album, but they played some from Time & Space and even Nonstop Feeling. Hearing gravity was probably my favorite part of the night, being second to last before they closed with T.L.C. Their performance was on point, and you could tell they have really improved and are mastering their craft.

Overall, I think this was my favorite concert I’ve been to. It’s something about not only them but their fanbase that was really comforting. People were going crazy, being cautious of, but not caring what anyone else was doing. People were even looking out for each other, making sure everyone was hydrated and safe in the crowd during the pit. Even the relationship between them and their fans is something admirable. 15 people could be on that stage at once and they respected the band and in no way interrupted the show, dancing with and around them. It was like beautifully choreographed chaos.

The band played really well together, perfectly in sync. You can tell they have good chemistry and really love what they do and doing it together. For my first show during Covid, it was really refreshing and definitely a great way to get back to live music. After that show, I’m definitely planning on going to another one of their shows on their upcoming tour. If you’re thinking of going I would definitely say, go with no hesitation. Even if you don’t have anyone to go with, I went by myself and felt extremely comfortable and had a great time. They’re a must-see band and I can’t wait to witness what they do next!
